The Best Job in the World
Austin, Texas — Twenty-five years ago, I pivoted from being a professional journalist to advising leaders, brands, countries, and celebrities on how to thrive as a heart-centered leader. I experienced great satisfaction in supporting leaders to courageously explore their own, unique, and compelling truths -- their life’s purpose -- for the singular, endless, sacred goal of becoming happy. I even wrote a best-selling book on the process -- One Less. One More. Follow Your Heart. Be Happy. Change Slowly. (Storytelling, Inc. 2014).
In 1989, I married my best friend, Candace Connors Vorhaus. We were an unlikely pair. I was a New York Jew, Candace a fair Irish Catholic lass. We were told we couldn’t physically have children. The experts were wrong. Five years later our son, Connor, was born, and two years later, our daughter, Molly, joined us, thanks to nothing more but the birds, bees, and of course, prayer. We’ve never taken our marriage for granted. We raised our children with only three simple rules: That they have roots, wings, and a safe place to land. Today, Connor and Nina are happily married with a young son. And Molly lives with her fiance, Joey, a U.S. Secret Service Agent at The White House. We live and breathe gratitude.
When Connor and Nina announced their engagement, they had one request: that I marry them. “Dad,” Connor said, “No one tells more inspiring stories and celebrates life more than you. There is no one other than you that Nina and I would even consider marrying us in front of all our family and friends than you.” And to match, Molly and Joey also insisted I marry them, too. Imagine that; I’m the lucky officiant that gets to marry both of my children.

Whenever I consider my job's enormity, I feel infused with love and light. My job is supporting couples to publicly proclaim their love, truths, hopes, dreams, and desires in a remarkable wedding ceremony they along with their family and friends will never forget. Such an honor!
